id=\"wgm-lightbox-img_1\">\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>St Augustine &#8211; History<\/h3>\n<p>In 1907, the rector, the Rev. James Davidson,\u00a0established Sunday Schools in North Village (St.\u00a0Monica&#8217;s) and in West Pembroke (St. Alban&#8217;s).<\/p>\n<p>Both of these were intended to be missions to &#8220;serve parishioners who lived some distance from St.\u00a0John&#8217;s. Miss Rosa Butterfield generously granted the\u00a0use of her school in West Pembroke for St. Alban&#8217;s,\u00a0and the mission began its life there. However, by\u00a01916, St Alban&#8217;s had to find a new site, and the\u00a0building for it was built on St. John&#8217;s Road.<\/p>\n<p>In February 1908, Davidson drew attention to\u00a0the further need for a Sunday School in Smith&#8217;s Hill\u00a0to serve the population there. Exactly a year later,\u00a0Davidson had the advantage of the assistance of Dr.\u00a0N .B. Stewart, a Black, who had served the Bethel\u00a0A.M.E. Church as pastor, but had left that church to\u00a0I.Je licensed by the Bishop of Newfoundland and\u00a0Bermuda as a Lay Reader with particular\u00a0responsibility to oversee the church schools in the\u00a0pa:r ishes of Hamilton, Smith&#8217;s, Devonshire and\u00a0Pembroke. With Stewart&#8217;s help, Davidson was able\u00a0to obtain the service of Mr. James Hay to be the\u00a0superintendent of the Smith&#8217;s Hill Sunday School,\u00a0and the school formally opened on 7 March 1909 in a hired room with borrowed chairs.<\/p>\n<p>From such a modest beginning, the only path\u00a0upward. Davidson granted a portion of his glebe\u00a0land for a site for a mission on Smith&#8217;s Hill as he had\u00a0previously done for St. Monica&#8217;s at North Village.<\/p>\n<p>Funds were raised, and building commenced to a\u00a0design by Horace H. Hallett (who had also been the\u00a0architect of St. Monica&#8217;s as well as of additions to St.\u00a0John&#8217;s). On Whitsunday 1911 (4 June), the building\u00a0was opened in the presence of a large crowd. It was\u00a0given the name of St. Augustine&#8217;s Mission Room after\u00a0St. Augustine of Hippo, the African bishop who\u00a0profoundly influenced western theological thought.<\/p>\n<p>An organ, which had been at the Cathedral,\u00a0and then used at the Garrison Chapel in Prospect,\u00a0was installed in 1912. The chancel was added in\u00a01916, also to Hallett&#8217;s design, and was opened on\u00a0Whitsunday (11 June).<\/p>\n<p>In 1913, there were donations of church\u00a0furniture from the Cathedral. As Canon Davidson\u00a0described them in the Pembroke and Devonshire\u00a0Parochial Magazine: &#8216;Among the gifts were part of the stairway, belonging to the Cathedral pulpit which we\u00a0hope to use as a pulpit, the old Bishop&#8217;s throne,\u00a0which will make a very nice clergy stall, several\u00a0kneelers, prayer desks, carpets &amp;c.&#8217;. Also in June\u00a01913, St. Augustine&#8217;s was lit by electricity, ten years\u00a0before this advantage came to St. John&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Smith&#8217;s Hill had become the favoured site of a\u00a0colony of West Indian immigrants who had settled in\u00a0that area. At that time, Bermudians looked down on\u00a0West Indian immigrants who were made to feel that\u00a0they were outsiders. As a result, they felt unwelcome\u00a0in the other missions and in St. John&#8217;s. The new\u00a0mission thus became for them a spiritual haven\u00a0where they worshipped in dignity and comfort.<\/p>\n<p>The congregation&#8217;s feeling of isolation from the\u00a0broader community resulted in the development of a\u00a0strong bond of kinship. The members placed a high\u00a0value on education and inspired their offspring to\u00a0pursue academic excellence. They possessed a\u00a0strong work ethic and Bermuda was culturally\u00a0enriched as these immigrants brought with them\u00a0customs and traditions which have now become an\u00a0integral part of the mosaic that is Bermuda. Thus, St.\u00a0Augustine&#8217;s became to them more than a mission; it\u00a0served as a church to which they could contribute\u00a0and which was a focus for their religious life.<\/p>\n<p>The first Superintendent of the Sunday School,\u00a0James Hay, was succeeded by Philip Henry who died\u00a0in November 1910. His successor was the first Lay\u00a0Reader in charge of St. Augustine&#8217;s, and was a\u00a0Jamaican, George A. DaCosta, who served from 1911\u00a0to 1934. He had come to Bermuda in 1892 to head\u00a0the Bermuda Collegiate Institute which had been\u00a0established by the A.M.E. Church. In 1897, he\u00a0severed his connection with that school and became\u00a0the first Headmaster of the Berkeley Institute.<\/p>\n<p>He was succeeded as Lay Reader in charge by\u00a0Joseph T. Christopher, a Kittitian, who was in charge\u00a0from 1934 to 1952. It was during Christopher&#8217;s\u00a0tenure of office that the church hall was built\u00a0(1945\/46) by the Kittitian contractor, Joseph\u00a0Daulphin. For this project, a number of members of\u00a0St. Augustines mortgaged their homes in order to\u00a0secure funds for the construction.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the persons who formerly worshipped\u00a0in this unique church are now dispersed throughout\u00a0the Island, and have taken with them a rich heritage\u00a0of spiritual values inculcated within the walls of St.\u00a0Augustine&#8217;s.
